THE COLOR: BLACK (SDN1002)
This semester, I am exploring inhabitation as a fundamental condition of spatial design. I will be delving into various modes of occupying space and designing spaces for living, working, and fostering social connections. In this initial stage of the project, I will utilize both physical and digital design processes to reimagine an existing iconic Brighton Bathing Box into a studio space and residence tailored for a contemporary spatial practitioner like myself.
RYOJI IKEDA
Ryoji Ikeda is a prominent figure in Japanese electronic music creation and stands as one of the foremost innovators in the realm of micro-electro sound. His work predominantly revolves around the intricacies of ultrasound, frequency modulation, and the fundamental properties of sound itself. Since 1995, Ikeda has been actively engaged in exploring various avenues of artistic expression, encompassing concerts, installations, recordings, and integrated sound compositions. Within his creative endeavors, he meticulously reconstructs and symbolizes music, time, and space through mathematical principles. By approaching sound as a visceral experience rather than merely a physical phenomenon, Ikeda endeavors to elucidate its profound connection to human perception. See more
These three pieces predominantly feature the "lamp" element, utilizing light to craft an ambiance that aligns with the design theme—an aspect precisely fitting my vision for my beach box. I aimed to cultivate a serene, detached atmosphere, inviting individuals to unwind and engage in meditation upon entering the space.
Regrettably, my concept couldn't come to fruition as Djurdjica specified limitations on the use of electronic lighting, permitting only natural and white light sources.Dumb Type-Extra Sensory Odissey, Part 1James Turrell, Amrta, 2011

Physical Modles
I am very pleased with the first prototype model, which showcases the malleability of the space effectively. Peering through the door, one can sense ample space inside the box. Each folded space reveals a beautiful interplay of light and shadow when illuminated. Despite this, I have decided to abandon the project for two main reasons. Firstly, the box's space is tailored for Ikeda's work or meditation, making it challenging to repurpose. Secondly, this model proves arduous to translate effectively in Rhino, presenting a significant challenge for me.
The second prototype model, while visually less striking than the first, served as a valuable exercise. It may lack complexity but holds relevance to Ryoji Ikeda 's preferences. The entrance staircase doubles as an observation deck, offering a secluded area for relaxation. The central circle accommodates Ryoji Ikeda's work and meditation. A two-tiered circular platform allows one to sit or stand comfortably within.
