PORJECT STATUS: INDIVIDUAL
Due to their different social identities, men's attitudes towards danger are very different from women's. Despite the pursuit of equality between men and women in modern society, it is undeniable that women need more protection in the face of danger. It also confirms to me the importance of considering women's safety in design. In the following design, i will pay more attention to the convenience of public transport for vulnerable groups.
Pakenham train line is start at flinder street and ends at pakenham.
Pakenham station, is built in a sparsely populated area, and the crime in this station is far more than in the other stations.
Based on internet data and data and the three methods of research i did (trigger imagery, mind map, questionnaire), nearly 90 percent of women have been sexually harassed or threatened on trains. About eighty percent of the time it happens in the early hours of the night. This also makes most women afraid to take trains at night.
After a summary, the main factors causing women's unease are crowded carriage, male gaze, and dark around the platform. Based on the above factors, i also consider the solution when designing the carriage. I didn't design a lot of seats for the crowded carriages, so there would be plenty of room to stand during rush hours for short journeys. My solution to the problem of being looked at by men is to use a miky card to prevent most men from entering the carriage. Oversized skylights illuminate the platform even at night.
Physical Modle
I tried to create an atmosphere of depression and helplessness through the model. The black background represents the night. The eyes and red lines are a metaphor for people's gaze. There are not only men but also women staring at girls. The two windows suggest that it is the girl's mental activity, while everyone is staring at her, her heart is miserable and broken.
The carriages were designed to be used only by women to protect their safety. However, when looking for information, it is found that many people will encounter some difficulties when taking public transport. For example, disabled people and mothers with strollers are often occupied because of a lack of space. Old people also encounter difficulties because of their lack of mobility.
The restrictions on the size of wheelchairs and strollers are designed to maintain space in the carriage, and i hope everyone in this carriage will feel comfortable and safe. And a large number of curves transformed from circles also reflect my hope that the passengers in this carriage respect each other and tolerate other.
